7 Good Reasons for the UN to have a Tunisian at their helm
1. Tunisia has always been endorsing the UN resolutions setting global peace as a strategic choice.
2. Tunisia is not involved in any standby or ongoing conflict with any neighboring nation or any other nation.
3. A Tunisian Secretary General will definitely be in a well-placed position when pushing negotiations on the West Sahara issue between Algeria and Morocco.
4. He/she would speak at least three (Arabic, English, and French) out of the six UN official languages (add Spanish, Chinese and Russian).
5. Tunisia hosted the Palestinian authority back in 1982 after Yasser Arafat was ousted from Beirut on the aftermath of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. At the same time, Tunisia is also home to several thousands of Tunisian Jews in the island of Djerba where the Synagogue of Ghriba is the second holiest place of worship for Jews right after Jerusalem. Tunisia is internationally known for its former leader Bourguiba's pragmatic and visionary stance to the Middle-East conflict. This aura of diversity and tolerance is definitely a plus for the credibility and the image of the would-be UN Secretary General.
6. Tunisia was home to the Arab league and hosted the World Summit for Information Society in 2005.
7. It will be yet another opportunity for Africa, the poorest continent and thus the one requiring the bulk of that much-needed development budget, to be represented again after Kofi Anan and Butrus Ghali.
