Everyone claims that his/her bread is hot and I'm no exception. Winston Churchill said once "When I am abroad, I always make it a rule never to criticize or attack the government of my own country. I make up for lost time when I come home."

I'm no Churchill but every time I'm asked about Tunisia here, I smile and tell that the bread has just gotten out of the oven "ylachlech"!

I'm no follower of the bread party either i.e I'm not a "khubzist". I know the same applies for a vast majority of the Tunisian people (i.e they are not khubzists) and that it's not "all-cake" out there. All we need is some housework, a good clean up of our internal kitchen under one leadership because otherwise, and it's well known, too many cooks spoil the broudhou (it's actually broth but I'm Tunisifying everything right now).

When I compare Tunisia to the rest of the Arab world, the same image always percolates in my mind. It always occurs to me that Tunisia is a loaf of Tabouna amongst a set of "baguettes". We Tunisians hate right angles and sharp turns. We like ambiguous semi-circles and fuzzy logic. If you look at the history of Tunisia, even way before President Bourguiba, the people have always been very good at coming up with ways to cushion invasions both with rhetoric and a natural quest for friendship. The worst enemy couldn't help but sit and have coffee with the local people and maybe stay for lunch and dinner. If not, why do you think the military leaders sent from the Arab peninsula had a very hard time taking full control over Ifriqiya (today's Tunisia)? Local people would play the smoke and mirror game all the time: they would claim themselves believers in the morning but would rebel the following day! The Islamic army had to go back and forth from Algeria and Morocco to Tunisia several times until the population really settled and was convinced about the new beliefs. But boy that was a war of attrition for the Islamic troops and its leaders often needed more resources to take over. In comparison, the Algerians resisted and fought teeth and nails but once they were beaten, that's it, they never rebelled again.

Forget about what is taught at the International Relations schools at John Hopkins or Harvard: the policy of containment was made in Tunisia. You can forget about finding the "ga3moora" with us and that what makes this country elusive, mercury and diplomatic. After all, didn't our grandmother manage to lay her hand on a whole city out of a bull's skin? ;)

Sorry for keep talking about bread and food but aren't we the people who made an uprising only for the sake of bread? wasn't one of our military leaders named Ali Bor3'ol because he fed his troops bor'3ol all the time? (if you ask me now, I'd have loved to be one of his men :)) Didn't you notice that our political lexicon is all about bread and kitchen? here are some examples if you're still confused: khubzist, 7ar9an, 9offa, t3'arbeel, 9hiwa (and of course that bad word for flour in the Tunisian dialect).

Not that there's a problem with our love story with food and politics. On the contrary I find it quite exciting and I'm pretty sure it would be a consistent topic for a PhD thesis. I'd even suggest "The Tunisian Cauldron" as an excellent title for a Weekly in English in Tunisia :)

I said there's no problem being "bread-ish" so to speak. I only wish we used all these skills in our foreign policy not in our internal affairs. Isn't diplomacy all about sticks and carrots after all?

Now if you'll excuse me, I just got a bit hungry and am right off to kitchen :)

فيروز تغني بدمشق متحدية السياسة ومانحة فنها لعشاقها
فيروز لم تغن في العاصمة السورية منذ 23 عاما (الفرنسية-أرشيف)

شدت المطربة اللبنانية فيروز في العاصمة السورية دمشق متحدية بذلك السياسة التي تفرق الشعوب والسياسيين الذين انتقدوا زيارتها لما اعتبروه التبعية "لدولة معادية" ومانحة فنها من جديد لعشاقها السوريين بعد غياب 23 عاما.

وأحيت فيروز التي جاءت انطلاقتها في عالم الغناء من إذاعة دمشق عام 1952 ليالي العاصمة السورية أمس الاثنين بتقديمها أول عروض مسرحية "صح النوم" أمام 1200 شخص التهبت أكفهم تصفيقا، وشكلوا معها كورسا ثانيا ردد حوارات المسرحية وأغنياتها.

وأثارت تلك الفنانة -وهي في السبعينات من عمرها- جدلا بالأوساط السياسية اللبنانية بقبولها دعوة دمشق واتهمها سياسيون ومن بينهم زعيم الحزب التقدمي الإشتراكي بأنها تخدم مصالح الاستخبارات السورية، فيما دعاها نائب آخر لعدم الغناء "لسجاني لبنان".

كما دعتها مجموعة من النشطاء السياسيين السوريين لمقاطعة دمشق، وأشاروا إلى اعتقالاتها للمعارضين.

وتدور المسرحية حول حاكم مستهتر تتحداه امرأة فقيرة، وهي من تأليف الموسيقار اللبناني الراحل عاصي الرحباني، وتأتي ضمن فعاليات الاحتفال باختيار دمشق عاصمة للثقافة العربية لعام 2008.

واكتظت دار الأوبرا بالمشاهدين الذين قدموا من العاصمة ومن المحافظات الأخرى ومن خارج سوريا، وانتظر الجمهور نحو نصف ساعة مترقبا فتح الستارة إيذانا ببدء العرض.

واشتعلت القاعة بالتصفيق لدى ظهور فيروز واقفة إلى يسار خشبة المسرح وظهرها للجمهور، فيما بدأ الكورس من الجهة الأخرى أول حوارات المسرحية ليسود بعده صمت مطبق تخلله شغف العديدين بصوت فيروز حيث صاروا يرددون حوارات المسرحية عن ظهر قلب، ويسارعون لأداء الأغنيات.

ومع موجات التصفيق اختلطت الآهات مع كل أغنية تصدح بها فيروز وخصوصا أغنية "هب الهوى" أو مرفقة بالضحك إثر تعليقات ساخرة تصدر منها في الحوار، أو مواقف وجمل طريفة للفنان أنطوان كرباج في دور الوالي، أو الفنان إيلي شويري في دور المستشار زيدون.

وتميز العرض بحضور رسمي لافت حيث كان على رأس الحاضرين فاروق الشرع نائب الرئيس السوري، وبعض الوزراء والدبلوماسيين العرب والأجانب وعدد من الفنانين السوريين.

وتم تمديد عروض المسرحية يومين إضافيين لتصير ثمانية عروض بدلا من ستة، نظرا للإقبال الكثيف على بطاقاتها قياسا بضيق المكان المخصص للعرض.

وعلى هامش الحفل، أقامت دار الأوبرا معرضا لصور فيروز شارك فيه مجموعة فنانيين تشكيليين رسموا بورتريهات لها وأهدوها إياها تعبيرا عن حبهم وتقديرهم لفنها.

كما قام العديد ممن حضروا المسرحية بكتابة رسائل في مبادرة أطلق عليها بعض الشباب السوريين "بطاقة حب دمشقية إلى فيروز" ودعوا من يشاء للكتابة للفنانة الكبيرة مؤكدين أنهم سيجمعونها في صندوق كبير يسلمونه لها شخصيا.

By 1980 an entire new generation was coming of age in North Africa. Large segments were literate, informed, politically sophisticated and articulate. They had never lived under colonial rule and to them the national liberation movement was just another chapter in their history books to be memorised for exams, Bourguiba an ailing and somewhat senile dictator, Ben Bella a dissident in exile, Boumédiène the protector of a predatory class and Hassan II a king to be respected as Commander of the Faithful but feared as commander of the secret police.

In each country the population considered that it had a tacit contract with the rulers whereby the latter would be left to rule unhampered as long as they guaranteed a minimum standard of living for the former. By and large politics and politicians were scorned, ridiculed, envied, courted or, most often feared and avoided. A vivid illustration of popular passivity towards politics is the Tunisian popular notion of khubzist or follower of the "bread party." However, passivity gave way to activism when the contract was broken.

Je n'ai jamais conçu la France comme étant un pays où l'on peut travailler tout en étant présent sur le plan international [tenez par exemple le nombre de lauréats français pour le prix Nobel, le nombre de publications scientifiques par an ou le nombre de brevets par rapport aux Etats Unis, à la GB ou au Japon ] sauf peut être comme un tremplin ou un LR [ Last Resort].

Loin de provoquer nos anciens travaillant en France et nos thésards au pays de Voltaire et loin de défendre quiconque et de jouer « la tante Nour » ou un certain « Djalabi à la Tunisienne » fasciné par le méchant oncle Sam car "chacun pour son drapeau" comme on dit, la crise de l'an passé en matière de recherche scientifique est une preuve suffisante que la France n'est plus dans le podium mais plutôt un pays qui halète pour garder l'écart sous contrôle : un wagon plutôt qu'une locomotive, un satellite et non plus une star.

La francophonie ne cesse de se rétrécir partout dans le monde et franchement la France n'a plus de poids politique sur le plan international [nombre de vétos utilisé depuis la création de l'UN et politique extérieure révélant une hypocrisie à la française]. La seconde guerre mondiale a été le dernier signe de la fin de l’empire français [ la France a été liberée et n'a pas émergé vainqueur comme la Grande Bretagne ou Les Etats Unis] et il parait que lorsque Mitterand a dénoncé la réaction de Washington en 1991, Margret Tatcher a rassuré Bush Senior lors d’une communication téléphonique : tu sais, Paris fait toujours son mascarat et son maquillage – a t-on-oublié qu’est elle la capitale des parfums et du make up ? - mais elle ne fera que ce que nous lui imposerons à la fin. Bref, il faut se libérer de la fascination pour la France comme un centre de gravité ou une puissance mondiale [c’etait a l'époque de Tahtawi mais plus maintenant].

Le chauvinisme français est aussi insupportable : les pilotes de ligne français refusent toujours de communiquer avec les tours de contrôle dans les aéroports français en anglais comme langue universelle d'aviation au risque de collisions et de malentendus [il y a eu des accidents à cause de cette obstination]. Les évènements de violence ces jours-ci à Paris, Strasbourg entre autres expriment bien un état d’effervescence et de révolte contre une république qui n’a su préserver les fondements et les valeurs sur lesquels elle s’est vue bâtir et d’où elle est censée tirer sa légitimité et sa splendeur [et à propos qu’ils cessent de vanter leur France démocratique et sa “Liberté - Egalité-Fraternité”, tout cela n'est plus et Sarkozy n’est que le “tip of the iceberg” ].

Peut être que ce mépris découle que comme tunisiens, nous avons été colonisés par la France, peut être que c’est l'image de la longue queue entourant l'ambassade française à Tunis, les citoyens souffrant de la canicule et du mauvais traitement, des acquisitions et des libertés qui ne cessent de diminuer pour le diaspora arabe au Pays de Rousseau, de Diderot et de Montesquieu .

Regardez encore l'industrie française : les français sont peut être de bons constructeurs [ avec la Concorde, le TGV et l’A380 c’est indéniable !] mais ils sont tellement de très mauvais vendeurs que leurs voitures - même après plus d'un siècle d’histoire - souffrent encore d'un manque sévère d’image [ Citroën est une marque en mort clinique et le marché d’automobiles français se restreint essentiellement à l'Europe et à l'Afrique du Nord ], leurs chars et leur rafales ne se vendent presque PLUS pour ne pas dire PAS [ ils ont fait pression sur l'Algérie pour en acquérir un certain nombre ], ils se vantent de leur orphelin "Charles de Gaulle", regardez leur Alstom qui se bat pour survivre, leur industrie cinématographique et leurs films-siestes, et surtout ne niez pas qu’un grand monde soupire losque la France perd en foot maintenant. Les français sont aussi en queue de la liste quand on parle d'Internet et de technologies de l'information [les Italiens viennent avant les français en tant qu’internautes]. Un observateur a dit une fois “La France est un pays du tiers monde avec une infrastructure du premier monde alors que l’Italie est l’inverse”.

Il est vrai que la France constitue avec l'Allemagne le moteur de l'Europe avec la différence que la France fonctionne au diesel [et qui a calé après le NON pour la constitution européenne] tandis que l'Allemagne avec un haut indice d'octane sans plomb. Il est vrai aussi que comme tunisien né et vivant dans un pays du tiers monde, je n'ai pas à critiquer la cinquième ou la sixième économie mondiale mais la France a gardé la haine pour les peuples du tiers monde [ lorsqu’il s’est prononcé devant une grande de foule de tunisiens dans l’esplanade nommée Habib Bourguiba depuis le 6 Avril dernier en plein Paris, Bernard Delanöe, maire de Paris a t-il bien pesé ses mots lorsqu’il a commencé son discours en reportant des propos - soigneusement et méchamment sélectionnés - du combattant suprême ? : “d’une poussière d’individus, d’une magma de tribus, j’ai fait un peuple digne de liberté ”] et je pense que la France n'a cessé de hausser son morale en essayant d'excercer sa “virilité” et ‘ d ’exposer ses muscles sur nous ’ [ comme en envoyant des troupes en Côte d’Ivoire par exemple ].

La France est indéniablement bien manipulée par le lobby juif donc elle n'est pas totalement pour les français – dont la majorité est bien des hypocrites - [ rappelez vous les dernières éléctions en date, J.M Le Pen n’a t-il pas accédé au deuxième tour ? et puis ils lancent un soupir général et simulé quand il a perdu les éléctions au deuxième tour ! ou encore comment ils ont tout fait pour contrer l’Amérique dans la guerre d’Iraq en 2003 – car ils savaient qu’ils n’auraient pas une miette du gâteau tout comme en 1991 - mais ont généreusement bombardé en 2001 et en 2002 les innocents en Afghanistan].

Je dis tout ceci pour dire que nous sommes pas un mur court [pour ne pas employer l’autre mot], que nous n’avons pas besoin de la France en tant qu’individus, que nous ne la regardons plus comme une “land of opportunities” et que nous sommes aptes à parier sur le bon cheval maintenant !

Je veux bien sûr visiter l‘Hexagone - qui reste quand même la première destination mondiale avec plus de 60 millions de touristes chaque année et qui est une vraie civilisation contrairement à l'orphelin Oncle Sam sans histoire ni racines - mais si vous voulez mon avis oubliez Flaubert et lisez Hemingway !

Note: this post dates back to almost three years ago, I'm publishing again as is...

I have a nasty feeling that the generations before us got corrupted by the newly established state upon independence and that we are just an "extension by continuity" to them and thus we hold a considerable part of the responsibility for the political/economical/social and especially behavioral decay we are witnessing and suffering from. All the same, I put the blame especially on our parents - the generation that was born around the independence, who had access to relatively decent public health services, to free education and jobs - but all the good things stop here. Yes, our parents strove to see their children gain access to better education, better food and health, better living conditions. Unquestionably, these are deeds to be acknowledged and rewarded. I also think that as every parents in the world, they wanted to fulfill their incomplete aspirations through us. The problem is that they never taught us to say NO. We were always asked to abide by rules that did not stand any discussions or thoughts. We were always told that education was the sure guaranteed way to social and financial success, that politics were a red line, that every thing is good as long as the family is good, that the fall of Palestine was the mistake of Palestinians themselves and that "kilmet la matjib bla" [ the "NO" word brings no pain ]!

I'm not denying my part of responsibility in all this nor am I trying to play the spokesman of a generation who is unwilling to take the burden from the one before and who is reluctant to carry on the path for the better. I'm just trying to figure out what went wrong, trying to ask questions I've never asked before and invite some of you to "pour your bucket" in the debate.

I for one still remember an anecdote when I was still before school. That was in 1985/1986 when the "light metro" was first launched. I usually used to talk a lot to myself and that day I was describing in a loud voice the landscapes the metro cut through, which may have made my father want to shut me up by telling me that the lady in front of us was the daughter of Bourguiba himself [ on the basis that I knew Bourguiba was something very important and that he deserved to be afraid of ]. Luckily I didn't shut up saying that if she were his daughter she wouldn't take the metro altogether ; what I want to say is that - with children increasingly smart, the 3'oul was no longer a good threat so it was replaced by anything else that would put us again on their YES-tracks - inconsciously, parents tried to draw the state, the government, and politics in general as a taboo, a thing to avoid, a red line, a land of no return. They kind of feared or even admired what the state has achieved all they witnessed when they were growing up [ may be we don't have that same feeling because we took too many things for granted].

It is not that I don't admire my father I do but I don't want to be a copy of him he is himself and I am what I am and I have to plow my own path otherwise what is my presence for ? my added value ? do I have to abide by rusty rules and midieval laws ? do I have to get corrupt and lengthen this lead-to-nowhere "trip" ? do I have to apply "kilmet la matjib bla" in its bad sense ?

I hope I won't be overprotective on my own children and sincerely I will be more pleased by a girl or boy who consistently discuss her/his professor than by her/his would-be high marks ! The only thing I am afraid of concerning this NO-Learning Story is that when I would say to her/him after teaching her/him to say NO and asking "Undaerstood ?" he would reply me by a NO !!!

Pour Quelques Minutes de Plus de Merde Sur RTCI....

After some almost three decades of loyal services in the promotion of the Shakespeare's language in Tunisia, the English Language Program on RTCI was rewarded by seeing its broadcast window reduced from 1 daily hour to just 30 minutes. Even worse, the program which is a live program saw its airing time change from 2-3 pm to 8-8.30 pm!

Now I'm not gonna try to defend the English language and uselessly remind my readers of some well established facts like this language being THE business and global communication language (the pie chart shows the web pages percentage by language, Source VeriSign) nor will I put it better than Tarek did in his post on this matter.

I'm not gonna attack the Elite "a la francaise", people who daily enjoy reading La Presse , who congratulated themselves during the visit of that little man from Hungary and who goes by the title of the President of the French Republic, that so-called Elite who boasts its achievements every now and then (like the infrastructure they made and which was drowned in the latest floods), that very same Elite who never misses an opportunity to remind us of the glorious past of France and its enlightenment era with all the fuss about the values and ethics of the French Republic. Thank you, we've been tasting those values for 75 years and we had enough of them.

English IS the default language for business, technology, academic papers, international agreements to name but a few. And it will probably keep that place long after the US will lose its superpower status in the international arena. If you're into the Haute Couture and the Cuisine Fine then you should probably be that proud of being so proficient in French because that's what the French are really good for right now: clothes and food.

Ever Heard about that saying: the blind leading the blind? Guess What! a country from the third world is anchoring itself to a country that can barely fund its research, where government is still subsidizing heavily almost everything and that happens to have a language that only excels by taking the bottom of charts every time the topic has to do with emerging or cutting-edge technology or even the number of people speaking that or that language.

It's just despicable. I'm not blogging in French anymore...

Anyway, to save up some time, here's a good report to read

I encourage all my fellow bloggers to share anything that falls under their hands on this not-so-well-documented chapter of history (I tried to dig deep into the web but, apart from the news articles at that time - which by definition routinely chronicle the news and don't go in-depth enough, I frankly didn't find something consistent enough to quench my thirst to know more on this murky affair). This report was the best I could find so again, if you have something, do share.

Also, I remember there's an excerpt at the end of the third episode of Zaman Bourguiba where Mzali, among others, gave his testimony (he was prime minister at the time). I couldn't cut the exact excerpt out of the episode so if someone can do it, I'd really appreciate.

I believe we can join efforts together to understand the puzzle and make this issue better known for the new Tunisian generations because it'd be very dishonest, coward and unpatriotic to let such thing be swept under the carpet just like that.

I will post more on this later. Until then, please skim through the report and let's gather facts.
